Tapered roller bearings

Tapered roller bearings are designed to carry radial and axial loads simultaneously. Their operating characteristics depend significantly on support adjustment, so in paired arrangements, the relative positioning of the bearings, axial clearance, and preload are important.

Operation under combined load

The raceway geometry allows load to be transmitted at an angle to the shaft axis. In a real assembly, this links bearing selection to the direction of the axial force, the distance between supports, and the required stiffness of the entire system.

Balancing load and adjustment

  • Radial load.
  • Axial force and its direction.
  • Pair arrangement.
  • Axial clearance or preload.
  • Operating temperature.
  • Inner- and outer-ring fits.
  • Housing and shaft stiffness.
  • Required service life for the given duty.
